Novilla Mattress Review: Novilla is all about bang-for-buck
I recently had the opportunity to try out my first “mattress-in-a-box” thanks to our friends over at Novilla. I have to admit, I have always been a bit skeptical about the concept of a mattress-in-a-box. I had a hard time believing that a mattress compressed into a small box, and shipped across the country from New York to my home in Seattle could be as supportive and comfortable as something you’d find at a traditional mattress store. My skepticism was put to the test a few weeks ago when Novilla my Novilla Bliss 12 Memory Foam Mattress arrived.
Before diving into this Novilla mattress review and talking about my experience with the comfort and quality, I need to acknowledge the incredibly low price. Novilla is, on average, a quarter of the cost of its competitors. The model being reviewed retails for $309.99 (but you can use our coupon REVNOVILLA to save 15%). From my research, I could not find any comparable option for a Queen size mattress – I challenge you to find a queen mattress for that price at this quality. Frankly, the low price added to my skepticism. However, after my first night sleeping on their bed-in-a-box I can confidently say that Novilla pleasantly surprised me and I am confident it will surprise anyone who sleeps on it.
Now that I’ve got that promotional stuff out of the way, let’s get to the heart of why you’re reading this Novilla mattress review. I’ll discuss my experience sleeping on the Novilla Bliss 12″ mattress, pros and cons of a bed-on-a-box, and wrap up with my final thoughts in why Novilla is, or is not, a mattress worth buying.
What is a bed-in-a-box?
A bed-in-a-box is exactly what is sounds like. Some logistical genius found a way to compress an entire mattress into a box small enough for most people to easily lug into their home. The real genius, however, is the ability for freight companies to now ship a mattress at a reasonable cost and with minimal delivery times. The bed-in-a-box concept has hit the mattress industry hard. Gone are the days of having to strap a queen size mattress to the roof of your mid-size sedan, coordinate with the local mattress store for delivery and pay extra to have a mattress delivered and setup. Bed-in-a-box mattresses can now be found at local retailers like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot; and they’re packaged small enough to fit in most vehicle’s trunks. Sure, you don’t get the opportunity to lay on the mattress for 5 minutes before making your decision but companies like Novilla a sleep guarantee instead.
If you purchase a Novilla mattress in the US and don’t like it in the first 30-days, you can return the mattress free of charge. The Mattress Warehouse on the corner isn’t giving that kind of guarantee on Serta, last time we checked.
The Novilla Mattress Review: Honest and Unbiased
Novilla Mattress First Impression
On first impression, the box arrived tattered and torn, quickly fueling my speculation about whether this was going to be a good experience. As per the instructions provided, my partner and I unrolled the mattress and set it aside to decompress. The decompression process takes about 72 hours, but can be used within 12 hours if you are impatient or don’t have anywhere else to sleep. We decided to give it the maximum recommended time to decompress. The waiting was truly the hardest part, as we constantly fought the urge to flop down on the mattress. After 72 hours, we removed our old spring mattress and swapped in the Novilla foam mattress.
Note – the mattress may look uneven or slanted at the edges or corners during the decompression process, but rest assured it will blossom into a wonderful bed.
What is the Novilla Bliss 12″ Mattress Made of?
The construction of the Bliss 12″ mattress from Novilla is why I agreed to give the mattress a shot for this review. Years ago I had a Tempurpedic mattress I bought from one of the store in the mall – I know I am dating myself here. Well, I threw that mattress away after a few months a debilitating back pain and I vowed to never have another memory foam mattress again. Those old Tempurpedics were blocks of memory foam with no zone support, cooling gel, or research into the safety of foam. Novilla, on the other hand, is CertiPUR-US Certified, eco-friendly, organic, and OEKO-TEX certified. The mattress is constructed in layer with a high-density base foam as a foundation and a gel-infused cooling memory foam, wrapped in bamboo rayon fiber. Memory foam mattresses have a come a long way.
Novilla Review: The First Night
After waiting the recommended 72 hours, the night had finally come for us to test out our new Novilla mattress. I tend to sleep better on a firm mattress. Reading some reviews prior to receiving the mattress, I expected the Novilla to be less firm than I liked; however, this was not the case. The memory foam held its own, slowly contouring to fit my body from head to toe. My last thoughts on that first night were “Wow this mattress is actually kind of… Zzzzz”.
Waking up the next day, I was pleasantly surprised. I felt well rested and had no recollection of any tossing or turning. Score one for Novilla! Realistically it takes more than one night to fairly assess a mattress, so read on to see how a few more nights go. Three more nights of well rested sleep, waking up refreshed. I expected there to be a learning curve for my body, or perhaps even a bit of back pain as I adjusted. there was nothing of the sort. Next came the true test: after spending two weeks traveling, how will I sleep on the Novilla when I finally get home?
PROSHover to Flip
Fell Asleep Fast and Woke up Rested
Slept Cool from the Gel-infusion
CONSHover to Flip
Faint Off-gassing Smell
Took Time to Settle Into the Foam
Harder to get In and Out of
Back to Bed, finally!
Novilla really delivered… and no, I am not just saying that because it came in the mail. My first night home, the moment my head hit the pillow it felt like I was out like a light. After sleeping in different beds night after night, I felt like an expert in knowing what bed suited my needs best. I had the most restful night of sleep out of all the Airbnb and hotels I had slept in and was ready for work the next morning. I slept so soundly that I don’t think I moved the whole night – the bedsheets were almost perfectly intact! Now, after 36 hours of traveling, I think I would have been able to sleep on a bed of cinder blocks, so I didn’t give the mattress the benefit of the doubt quite yet – I still had a few more full nights of sleep to make my final decision. I can confidently say that after another week of sleeping on the Novilla mattress, I am as pleased with it as I was that first night. I have been able to sleep fully through the night every night on this mattress and be able to wake up with energy for the day. I am mainly a stomach and side sleeper (hence why I lean toward firmer mattresses) and this mattress is able to conform to my body in a way that does not give me neck or back pain at all.
Novilla Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, I have nothing but positive things to say about Novilla. Considering all of the reservations I had going into using this mattress, I have been blown away and overly satisfied with the quality and value. Although I think I do still prefer a firmer mattress when it comes to relaxing in bed, reading, watching television, etc. I have been able to sleep incredibly well and expect to continue to sleep even better as I continue sleeping on it. All in all, Novilla is an awesome, quality mattress with a great value and I recommend it to anyone looking for their next affordable mattress.
